Fractions can be manipulated in a variety of ways. We can add and subtract them. We can multiply and divide them. However in order to make sense of it we must compare like with like. For example sixths are not the same as eighths. Therefore we must express sixths and eighths as an equivalent fraction that they have in common.

2/6 + 3/8= ?

I cannot add as they are not the same.

I need to find a common equivalent fraction for 2/6 and 3/8 a common denominator. The first number that I can divide both 6 and 8 into is 24.

2/6 is ?/24 I must multiply 6x4 to get 24. We know that whatever we do to the bottom we must do the same to the top. This means we multiply 2x4=8

2/6=8/24

3/8= ?/24 I MULTIPLY 8X3=24. I must do the same to the numerator number on top.

3X3=9. 3/8 is 9/24

Now we can add both because they are the same fraction. 8/24 + 9/24= 17/24
